Most students treat category selection as an afterthought, a box you tick on the registration form once the real work is done. This is one of the most common ways strong projects lose recognition they should have won.

Your category determines which judges evaluate your work, and judges assess your project against everything else in that category. Put a brilliant microbiology study in the wrong category, and it gets read by someone whose expertise is elsewhere, ranked against projects it was never designed to compete with. The science does not change. The outcome does.

The good news is that choosing well is not complicated once you understand the single principle the official fairs use to make the decision. This guide walks through that principle, shows you how to apply it to a genuinely ambiguous project, and explains why the choice matters more than most students realize.


Your Category Is Defined by What You Studied, Not How You Studied It

This is the rule that separates students who understand category selection from students who guess. Your project belongs in the category that matches its focus, the question you actually investigated, not the tools or methods you happened to use along the way.

The California State Science Fair gives the cleanest illustration of this. Imagine you compared the effectiveness of several commercial antibiotic products using bacteria as your test subject. It is tempting to file this under microbiology, since there are bacteria involved. But the subject you actually studied was the commercial products, so the project belongs in Materials Science. Now change one thing: if instead you studied the specific effect of an antibiotic on the bacteria themselves, the bacteria are the subject, and the project belongs in Microbiology. Same lab bench, same petri dishes, two completely different categories, because the focus is different.

The same logic applies everywhere. A computer model that studies how pollution affects plant growth is a plant sciences project, because plants are what you studied. But if the central achievement was writing the model itself, the algorithm, the computation, then it belongs under mathematics or software. Ask yourself what your project is really about once you strip away the equipment, and the category usually becomes obvious.


The Two Questions to Ask Yourself

Society for Science, which runs ISEF, boils the decision down to two questions. When your project could plausibly fit more than one category, ask:

  1. Who is the most qualified person to judge my project? A doctor, an engineer, a computer scientist, a plant biologist?

    1. The category you choose determines the expertise of the judge you are assigned, so you want to land in front of someone equipped to appreciate what is hard and impressive about your specific work.

  2. What is the emphasis of my project? What did you actually study, make, or do?

    1. The most innovative or important characteristic of your work is the one that should decide your category. If the breakthrough is a medical application, that points one way. If the breakthrough is the engineering of the device that made the application possible, that points another.

These two questions almost always yield the same answer: your category.


Why the Choice Carries Real Weight

Category selection is not administrative. It shapes how your project is evaluated in three concrete ways.

Judges are assigned to categories and judge based on their expertise. A project placed among specialists who understand its field will be assessed on its actual merits. The same project placed among generalists, or specialists in a different discipline, may simply not be understood well enough to be ranked highly.

Your competition is everyone else in that category. Recognition is relative. You are not judged against some absolute standard but against the other projects grouped with yours. Choosing the category where your project's strengths stand out, rather than one where they are ordinary, is part of competing well.

At ISEF specifically, the finalist is fully responsible for the final category choice. It is not made for you, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than defaulting. Proper category selection measurably increases a project's likelihood of recognition, which is precisely why it deserves real thought rather than a last-minute guess.


ISEF vs. Regional and State Fairs

Regeneron ISEF uses a fixed set of 22 categories for 2026, each with defined subcategories, and these are built specifically to align judges with the right projects. If your goal is ISEF, learning to place your work within that system early is worthwhile, because the category you compete in at the regional level often carries forward.

That said, category systems are not universal. Local, regional, state, and national fairs may or may not use the ISEF categories, and many maintain their own lists shaped by their region's needs.

A project's category can even change as it advances: a fair's review committee may reassign your project to group it with similar work, so the category you entered at your county fair is not guaranteed to be the one you compete in at the state level.

The principle stays the same at every level: focus on method, but always check the specific category list for the fair you are actually entering. When in doubt, choose the primary category that best describes your project rather than a catch-all "Other."


Where a Coach Makes the Difference

The genuinely hard cases are the ambiguous ones, the interdisciplinary project that could credibly sit in two or three categories, where the "right" choice depends on judgment you only develop by having competed. Is your biosensor a biomedical engineering project or a materials science one? Does your machine-learning model of a biological system belong in computational biology or systems software? The official rules tell you the principle. They cannot tell you which choice gives your specific project the best shot in front of this year's judges.
