Rishab built this blueprint from scratch, improving it slowly from when he won the 3M Young Scientist competition, all the way to winning the 2022 Regeneron Young Scientist Award.

What do you need to think about for your science fair poster?

Designing a compelling science fair board harmonizes scientific rigor with storytelling prowess. Your poster is a compelling narrative that draws judges and spectators into the heart of your project.

You need to be intentional in every detail, from meticulous layout to eye-catching visuals. Your board should work in tandem with your pitch to showcase your brilliance and leave a lasting impression.

Let's dive into how Rishab laid out his poster. It’s important to highlight that your poster doesn’t have to be the same. You need to make it to fit your style. Some winning projects are very minimalistically, just black text on a white background. Other posters are super colorful, and they can win too.

Craft Your Science Fair Poster’s Layout  

Build your template

You can use PowerPoint or Google Slides to build a template for your poster.  For a trifold board, create a custom-sized template of 48 inches in width by 36 inches in height.

Then it’s time to start building your science fair poster’s layout. You can take inspiration from past ISEF winners’ templates, or use templates available online, such as Rishab's 7th grade poster.

Abstract/Introduction

Kick things off with a concise yet captivating abstract or visual abstract that piques curiosity and sets the stage for your groundbreaking work.

This visual abstract was something that Rishab used on his poster, and got the judges’ attention at ISEF. However, since then, it has been banned, so do not copy this.

Background/Objectives

Provide context by outlining the scientific background, significance, and clear objectives or hypotheses driving your research.

If it’s an engineering project, this is where you can outline your goals.

Methods/Procedures

This is the meat of your poster – a comprehensive yet visually appealing section detailing your methodology.

Prioritize figures, diagrams, and images over dense text blocks to effectively convey your approach. As you speak, you’ll use your poster to illustrate your points, so ensure that you have a variety of visuals.

Results

Showcase your hard-earned data and findings through carefully curated graphs, tables, and visuals. Let the numbers and patterns speak for themselves.

Data Analysis/Statistical Analysis

For data-heavy projects, dedicate a section to robust statistical analyses that highlight key insights and trends.

Conclusion

Tie everything together by interpreting your results, addressing the broader implications, and proposing future directions. 

If you want, you can separate the conclusion and future work. That is what Rishab chose to do to make them clearer.

Key References

Instead of cramming a lengthy bibliography onto your poster, strategically include the most pertinent references that underpin your work. Then you can have a full bibliography printed out separately, so that the judges can see the full list if they’re interested.

Before you decide to follow Rishab’s advice on references, make sure that you check ISEF or your local science fair’s rules to ensure that they don’t require all your references to be on your poster.

Remember, your poster board should serve as a visual aid, complementing your oral presentation rather than being a script.

Treat it as a roadmap, guiding judges through your scientific odyssey while you narrate the finer details.

Polish Your Science Fair Poster

Also ensure that they’re large enough to read.

Visuals Galore

But Rishab recommends fabric posters for their unparalleled portability, durability, and a sleek, professional finish.

You can effortlessly fold your poster and slip it into your backpack, without creating creases or tears.

Plus, the setup is a breeze, allowing you to hang your poster in seconds without fussing with glue or tape.

Bringing Your Science Fair Booth to Life

Research Binder or Lab Notebook

Compile your literature review, annotated research papers, and meticulous notes into a polished binder or lab notebook.

Consider if you’ll need a power source, and get in touch with ISEF beforehand if you do, as you’re not guaranteed one.

Physical Models or Prototypes

Check the rules about what is and isn’t allowed with models and prototypes.

Presenting your poster

As you present your poster, keep these pointers in mind.

Conversational Tone

Ditch the robotic, rehearsed delivery in favor of a natural, conversational style. Practice presenting to friends, family, or even a mirror to hone your authentic voice.
