Once a high school student has a paper that is ready for submission to a journal, the next decision is where to send it. This is a question that even experienced researchers think carefully about, and for students navigating the academic publishing landscape for the first time, it can feel overwhelming. The number of journals is enormous, the differences between them aren't always obvious, and the consequences of choosing poorly range from wasted months to reputational damage.

A structured approach makes the decision considerably more manageable.

Navigating journal selection has been part of my own publication process, and it's one of the areas where students benefit most from having a clear framework before they start browsing.


Journal Tiers: Where High School Research Fits

Not all journals carry the same weight, and it's worth understanding the publishing landscape for high school students before selecting a target journal.

High-Impact Journals

At the top of most fields sit high-impact peer-reviewed journals with rigorous review processes, selective acceptance rates, and wide readership among active researchers. In biology and medicine, journals like Nature, Science, and Cell occupy this tier.

In more specialized fields, examples include journals like PNAS, the Journal of the American Chemical Society, or similar field-specific publications with strong reputations and high rejection rates. These journals are not realistic first targets for most student researchers, and submitting to them prematurely wastes time.

Middle-Tier Journals

Below that tier sits a broad middle range of reputable, peer-reviewed journals that are field-specific and well-regarded without being the most selective outlets in existence. For student researchers with strong, well-documented projects, this is often the most realistic and appropriate target range.

Examples relevant to science fair topics include journals like PLOS ONE, which is a broad open-access journal known for accepting methodologically sound research across disciplines, or more specialized outlets depending on the topic.

Journals to Avoid

There is also a growing category of predatory journals that students must actively avoid. These publications charge fees, conduct little or no real peer review, and exist primarily to generate revenue. A paper published in a predatory journal does not carry academic credibility and can actually reflect poorly on the researcher.

Checking a journal against the Directory of Open Access Journals or consulting a mentor before submitting is a straightforward way to avoid this category.


How to Match Your Research Paper to the Right Journal

Now, the most practical starting point is reading the papers you cited in your own literature review and noting where they were published. If the researchers whose work most closely resembles yours are publishing in a particular journal, that journal is already a candidate. Its readership is the right audience, and its scope clearly covers the topic you are investigating.

From there, the selection criteria narrow around a few key questions.

  • What is the journal's stated scope, and does the paper genuinely fit within it?

  • What is the typical length and format of papers the journal publishes, and does the manuscript match?

  • What is the journal's review timeline, and is that compatible with the student's goals, whether that means building a college application or contributing to ongoing research?

Impact factor is a useful but imperfect metric. It measures how frequently papers in a journal are cited, which gives a rough indication of the journal's reach and prestige within its field. For student researchers, impact factor matters less than fit and accessibility. A paper published in a well-regarded, field-specific journal that actually goes through rigorous peer review is more valuable than a rejection from a top-tier journal.

The review process tends to be more instructive, the acceptance criteria are calibrated to the stage of the researcher, and publication in a credible student journal still carries genuine value on a college application or research program application.


How to Build Your Journal Submission List

The best approach is to identify five to seven journals in descending order of selectivity and begin with the most appropriate one given the quality of the paper. If rejected, revise based on the feedback and move to the next. This is exactly how professional researchers approach submission, and there is no reason students should hold themselves to a different standard.

Choosing the right journal is almost always about finding the right place for your work, one where the research will be read, evaluated fairly, and ultimately contribute to the ongoing conversation in the field.
