Envirothon is an environmental and natural resources conservation problem-solving leadership experience and academic competition for high school students across the United States, Canada, China, and Singapore.
Incorporating STEM principles, hands-on learning, and outdoor field experiences, the Envirothon fosters student learning in the areas: Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Soils and Land Use, Wildlife, and Current Environmental Issues.
With annual trips worldwide granted to finalists and opportunities to travel and connect with students who are just as passionate about environmental science, this program can be promising as long as you and your team commit and compete.
This begs the question of beginning your journey in the first place: Where do I begin?
By the way, Rishab Jain, a Harvard student who has achieved success in numerous international competitions has made his STEM Student Guide public with a a list of 50+ more opportunities and competitions.
You should definitely check it out next.
No more having to search for top-quality programs. this guide has it all.
Recognize the Format Every year, Envirothon has an annual theme to follow.
Some previous examples include: Adapting to a Changing Climate Waste to Resources Water Resources Management: Local Control and Local Solutions Why does it matter?
As soon as you pass the regional level, the state and national format heavily orient all problems toward the annual theme.
Additionally, the subject of Current Environmental Issues follows the yearly theme.
For every subject besides Current Environmental Issues, it helps that they can be accumulated.
If you learned one thing from one year, you can remember it and apply it to problems the next year.
On the website, each subject has learning objectives that can serve as an outline of what you should learn.
Additionally, each team can have up to five members.
With 5 members and 5 subjects, a common and useful method is to split up the subjects: one person is well-versed in forestry, and the next is a wildlife expert.
It also helps to look at all other subjects, but because you look at the tests and operate as a group, it's better to function as each person is an expert on one subject.
However, the subject current issues is a bit different.
As said before, because it follows the annual theme, students will have to study when Envirothon releases its packet of current issues.
They are usually available for free on the website.

Master the Knowledge If you're new to the competition format, gain as much knowledge as you can on your subjects as a team.
This competition is unique in that Envirothon requires you to interact with real samples of the environment rather than sitting down in a room and simply answering questions with a bubble sheet.
On the regional level, listen closely to what the rangers have to say, and any information they provide, even if it seems unimportant.
They can often come up in the test.
After you proceed to the state level, the state and national level is when oral presentations are another aspect for the judges to evaluate your knowledge in the environment.
To fully understand, read the policies and rules.
But for a brief blurb, you are given a prompt regarding agriculture and the environment.
Your team has a week to conjure up a presentation that properly responds to the problem within the prompt and how it's the best solution given.
Get Into The Habit Now that you understand the format, and know a little more about what you're supposed to do in preparation for the competition, the challenge for most students is the actual retainment of information.
It can be pretty difficult for those who are already jam-packed with schoolwork and other extracurriculars, so it's great that you wanted to take up on this challenge!
To provide yourself the best experience of retaining the information and analyzing the implications of it, creating a binder for your subject will help to organize and compile everything you learned.
With your team, try to meet up at least once a week to create an environment encouraging you all to study.
Check in with each other to ensure that progress is being made.
Although isn't required at all, these small recommendations can exponentially increase your confidence in performing well in the competition.
Lastly, develop your critical thinking skills.
Unlike the SAT or ACT which can easily have a format to study to succeed in, the Envirothon competition require teams to analyze complex scenarios and come up with innovative ideas to solve the problem.
The best way to prepare for this is to look at Envirothon's study resources.
Previous years could be of additional benefit, as well!
However, there's an even better method to study.
