

So you are good at math. Great, even. Now you want to test yourself against the best in the world, and the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is that arena: the pinnacle of high school math competitions and the oldest of the international science olympiads.
The 67th IMO was held in Shanghai, China, from July 10 to 21, 2026, drawing 666 contestants from 117 countries, the largest field in the competition's history, and the 2027 edition heads to Budapest, Hungary.
This guide covers what the IMO is, how qualification works in the United States, what the exam actually demands, and the preparation strategies and resources that give you a real chance of getting there.
What Is the International Math Olympiad?
The IMO began in Romania in 1959 and is now the foremost global mathematics competition for pre-university students. Each country sends a team of up to six students, and while contestants travel and celebrate as national teams, the competition itself is entirely individual.
The exam is famous for demanding more than knowledge. Problems draw on algebra, geometry, combinatorics, and number theory, but every one of them requires creative insight and a complete written proof, not just a final answer. Textbook technique gets you to the starting line; the IMO tests what you can build beyond it.
The full event runs over a week and a half, and the contest days are only part of it. Contestants attend lectures from eminent mathematicians, cultural excursions, and social events that turn the IMO into a genuine gathering of the world's strongest young mathematical community. The friendships formed there routinely outlast the medals.
How to Qualify in the United States
You cannot sign up for the IMO. Every contestant earns a team place through their country's selection pipeline, and in the United States that pipeline is run by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
The ladder has four rungs. It starts with the AMC 10 or AMC 12, the broad-entry contests taken by hundreds of thousands of students each fall. Top AMC scorers qualify for the AIME, a harder invitational exam, and combined AMC and AIME scores determine invitations to the USAMO (or USAJMO for younger students), the national olympiad where problems become full proofs.
The strongest USAMO performers, roughly 60 students, are invited to the Mathematical Olympiad Program (MOP), the intensive summer training camp from which the six-member US team is selected.
The US team's results show what that pipeline produces: at IMO 2026, the United States placed second among 117 teams, earning four gold medals, a silver, and a bronze, with two American students posting perfect scores.
The Exam Format
The IMO is two consecutive exam days. Each day presents three problems and four and a half hours to solve them, for six problems and nine hours of examination in total. Each problem is worth 7 points, for a maximum score of 42, and points are awarded for the quality and completeness of your written proof, with partial credit for meaningful progress. Calculators are not permitted.
Difficulty escalates by design: problems 1 and 4 open each day at the most accessible level, and problems 3 and 6 are traditionally the hardest, sometimes solved by only a handful of students in the world.
Medals are awarded by score thresholds set so that roughly half the contestants earn one; at IMO 2026, gold required at least 29 points, silver at least 23, and bronze at least 16, with honorable mentions for anyone who fully solved at least one problem.
Preparation Strategies
Master the Fundamentals
Rock-solid command of algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics comes first, because math olympiad problems love to mix areas, and a gap in any one of them will surface at the worst moment. As you advance, the problems become proof-based, so aim to understand why every technique works, not just how to execute it.
Solve Past Problems Relentlessly
Decades of past problems with solutions are freely available, and working through them is the fastest way to internalize the difficulty, the style, and the standard of written proof expected. Broaden the diet with problems from the AMC, AIME, USAMO, and other national olympiads, which build the same muscles at climbing levels of difficulty.
Practice Under Exam Conditions
Solving a problem at leisure and solving it against the clock are different sports. Time yourself regularly, and periodically sit full four-and-a-half-hour sessions with three problems, exactly as the real exam runs. You would not run a marathon without a stopwatch, and timed practice doubles as a diagnostic, showing you precisely where your speed and stamina break down.
Find Your Community
Competitive math is not a solo pursuit. School math teams and math circles offer structured practice and peers who push you, and if you competed in MATHCOUNTS in middle school, you have already felt how much a team environment accelerates growth. At the top of the ladder, training camps like MOP surround you with experienced mentors, past IMO participants, and peers who live and breathe the subject. Collaborative problem dissection, in any of these settings, will show you approaches you would never find alone.
Seek Out Mentorship
When you hit a wall, a mentor changes everything. A strong math teacher, a former olympiad competitor, or a specialized tutor can offer tailored problem-solving techniques, diagnose the weaknesses you cannot see, and provide honest feedback that books and videos never will. Compete Strategically on Exam Day
Read all three problems before writing anything, and start where your strengths are, banking solid points and confidence early. Watch the clock, and if a problem stonewalls you, move on rather than sinking your whole session into it. The goal is to maximize your score, and a complete, rigorous solution to one problem beats fragmentary progress on three. Perfection is not the aim; significant, provable headway is.
Stay Healthy and Consistent
Preparation measured in years cannot run on cramming and caffeine. Adequate sleep, regular exercise, and genuine breaks keep the mind sharp enough to do creative mathematics, and stress-management habits like mindfulness pay off directly under exam pressure. A consistent study schedule, sustained over months, beats sporadic intensity every time.
Learn From Every Contest
After each competition, run an honest post-mortem. Identify not just which problems you missed but why: a content gap, a misread, a time-management failure. Each diagnosis becomes the focus of your next training block. Treat every contest as a stepping stone, because every problem you solve along the way contributes to your growth as a mathematician.

From Olympiad Math to Original Research
The IMO asks you to solve beautiful problems that already have answers. Mathematical research asks the question behind the question: can you discover something new?
