Introducing a new competition for high schoolers and middle schoolers called the International Research Olympiad (IRO)!
What is the International Research Olympiad?
There has been a distinct separation between the Research and Olympiad communities, but the IRO aims to merge these.
The International Research Olympiad is a global research olympiad competition aiming to provide a unique platform that offers young minds an opportunity to delve into the world of scientific research and innovation.
How does the IRO differ from other scientific Olympiads?
The International Research Olympiad stands out for its focus on practical application, creativity, and communication skills in STEM, developing the critical skills one needs to be a researcher.
While traditional Olympiads may emphasize theoretical and factual knowledge, the IRO pushes participants to apply their deep understanding and critical thinking skills towards challenging research topics.
What are the benefits of participating in the IRO?
Participants gain valuable experience in scientific research, engage in a test that challenges their ability to absorb and comprehend literature, while developing skills they will carry into their professional lives.
Additionally, you will get to interact with like-minded individuals across the world, fostering a stronger research community.
Who is eligible for the IRO?
The IRO welcomes all individuals under the age of 18 or those who have not yet graduated from secondary/high school, though it’s aimed at grades 6-12, including homeschoolers. It is also a global competition. The first two stages are online and the finals are held at Harvard University.
How is the International Research Olympiad formatted, and what skills does it test?
This IRO has 3 stages:
The Open Exam: A multiple-choice exam that focuses on skills that researchers need to have, stressing proper literature review comprehension as well as beginner to advanced data analysis.
Semifinals: This exam is more challenging, and only the top 10% qualify. There are now free-response questions judged by qualified researchers who dive deeper into participants' ability to articulate and apply their understanding of scientific concepts.
The Finals: The top 15 participants then qualify for the most difficult round, which is held in-person at Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. Students compete for the coveted gold, silver, and bronze medals in the IRO. Additional sponsor prizes, media opportunities, and recognition will be awarded.
Can I participate in the IRO without prior Olympiad experience?
Absolutely!
Whether you are a seasoned research/olympiad veteran or this is your first experience, this Olympiad is for you. It’s a great opportunity to challenge yourself, enhance your scientific knowledge, and develop communication skills.
What does the IRO registration fee cover?
The registration fee is 25 USD. It’s used to create and maintain a high-quality curriculum, moderate the IRO team, and prepare examinations. So it’s all directly invested into making the competition better. The IRO is a non-profit, so all funds are reinvested into the initiative, including curriculum development and operational costs.
How does the IRO handle AI use and cheating?
The IRO forbids the use of generative AI, as well as other automated tools or software that significantly enhance research capabilities beyond standard means, is strictly prohibited.
IRO has also implemented a comprehensive and extensive anti-cheating protocol to ensure the integrity of the competition. While the specifics of these measures are not publicly disclosed, rest assured that maintaining a fair and honest competition is a top priority.
Is there a specific focus or theme for the IRO each year?
The IRO may have varying themes or focuses each year, depending on the current trends and advancements in the world of science and technology. This ensures that the content is always relevant and challenging.
What resources are provided to participants to prepare for the IRO?
The IRO offers a range of resources, including the official IRO textbook, a comprehensive curriculum, study materials, including practice exams, and guidance from experts.
