What is the Chemistry Olympiad?

The United States National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) is a premier competition designed to inspire high school students to excel in chemistry.

Sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS) since 1984, the USNCO seeks to challenge and acknowledge the brightest young minds in the field of chemistry.

This competition is not just a test of knowledge but an opportunity to explore the vast world of chemistry beyond classroom learning, offering students a platform to showcase their skills, engage with complex chemical concepts, and gain recognition for their achievements.

To make it to the Olympiad on the national level, you’ll first have to get past the local exams.

In this section, you’ll be tackling 60 multiple-choice questions in 110 minutes.

Do well here, and you might be one of the two students from your school moving on to the national level.

This part is more just like a bigger, tougher exam that happens in your state or region.

You’ll be going to "nationals" with just a handful of people – it's pretty unique!

The basic layout of nationals is as follows: Multiple Choice Section: First, there's a 90-minute, 60-question multiple-choice test.

It's quicker and tougher than the local exam, so you've got to be sharp.

Essay/Open Response Questions: This is a 105-minute section with 8 free-response (essay) questions.

This part tends to be pretty tough, so you’ll want to make sure you’re even better prepared.

Lab Practical: The last part is what most competitors say is the best part: a 90-minute lab practical with just 2 problems.

Before you start, a proctor sets up all the chemicals you'll need, and then you get to do actual chemistry experiments to find the answers.

It's a blast because it's actually hands-on, and you get to do all kinds of experimenting with different chemicals (safely, of course…)!

If you're among the top 150 nationwide, you get national honors.

Make it into the top 50, and you earn high honors.

These are both very prestigious titles, with less than 1% of test-takers (16,000 kids take the USNCO yearly!) earning either.

However, the real prize is making it to the top 20!

The twenty highest scoring students every year get to go to the USNCO study camp, a two-week long intensive chemistry training camp meant to help you hone your skills and really get into the nitty-gritty of competition chemistry.

At the end, the top 4 are picked as the official team to represent the US at the international level.

This competition is no doubt something you should consider if you’re passionate about chemistry!

These textbooks are tailored to cover a wide range of topics that align well with what the Olympiad tests, including areas that might not be thoroughly covered in your high school curriculum!

This is your guide to navigating the huge field that is chemistry.

Set Clear Goals: The first step in your preparation should be to set clear, specific goals for what you want to achieve.

These goals can vary greatly depending on your current level of understanding and where you see the most opportunity for growth.

For instance, one week you might focus on the organics, while another could be dedicated to honing your problem-solving skills with a set number of practice exam questions.

It's crucial that these goals are measurable and realistic; this way, you can track your progress and adjust your plan as needed.

Schedule Your Study Time: Consistency is the key to retaining complex information and building on your knowledge.

Dedicate specific times during the week for uninterrupted studying.
