Biotechnology is a field between biology and technology which is rapidly advancing among high school students.

With this growing interest, internships offer a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience and insight into this dynamic field.

1. Amgen Scholars Program Description: The Amgen Scholars Program provides high school students with the chance of working alongside with scientists at top universities like Stanford and MIT.

2. Broad Summer Scholars Program Description: The Broad Summer Scholars Program (BSSP) invites highly motivated high school students with a strong interest in science to spend six weeks at the Broad Institute.

We match students with Broad scientists to conduct original, cutting-edge research projects in areas such as: cancer biology, psychiatric disease, chemical biology, computational biology, infectious disease, and more.

In addition to original research, students will get to explore scientific careers; attend interesting scientific talks; present their research to the Broad community in a scientific poster session; attend a college fair; participate in fun social events; and meet other students who share similar interests.

Eligibility: To be eligible to apply to BSSP, applicants must: Be a rising senior in high school (i. e. students can apply their junior year) Attend a high school in MA within commuting distance to the Broad Have earned a B or better in science and math classes Demonstrate excitement for science!

No previous research experience is required.

Be a US citizen, permanent resident, or non-US citizen with employment authorization (i. e.

DACA) Be available for the entire 6-week duration of the program.

Students cannot be enrolled in other courses or programs, or commit to other employment, during program hours.

3. Jackson Laboratory Summer Student Program Description: The Jackson Laboratory Summer Student Program is another outstanding internship option for high school students interested in genetics and mouse-based research.

With locations in Bar Harbor, Maine, and Farmington, Connecticut, this program allows students to work alongside world-renowned scientists conducting research in areas such as cancer biology, neurobiology, and aging.

4. Monell Science Apprenticeship Program Description: The Monell Science Apprenticeship Program’s mission is to stimulate an interest in biomedical science or medicine as careers – particularly in groups typically underrepresented in science, including females, ethnic or racial minorities, and the economically disadvantaged.

Their Current Summer Program Includes: At least seven weeks of paid full-time structured research activity with a Monell scientist.

A public conference where apprentices present their research to scientific staff, family members, and friends.

Enrichment activities that include lectures on scientific topics; public speaking and written communication; and ethical principles guiding human and animal research.

Opportunities to learn about different careers in medicine and science.

5. Rockefeller University Summer Science Research Program (SSRP) Description: SSRP Scholars will participate on a research team designed and guided by Rockefeller trainees.

SSRP teams mirror the structure of a Rockefeller laboratory, where one trainee serves as team lead with support from dedicated scientist-mentors.

Each team will have their own space in the RockEDU laboratory.

The SSRP team experience is enhanced by elective scientific courses, guest lectures, and social events.

Program at Glance: Mentored biomedical research program at The Rockefeller University Monday, June 24 – Thursday, August 8, 2024 SSRP scholars will be on campus up to 35 hours per week during normal business hours Applicants must be current high school juniors or seniors Accepted students must be age 16+ at program start — no exceptions — and must commit to the entire program.

Eligibility: Junior or Senior in high school, must be 16 years old Commit entirely to the seven week program

6. Quest Student Research Institute Summer Internship Description: IT projects will focus on using Python, Java or other programming languages for interesting applications such as in cryptography or in global data trend evaluations.

Computational science projects will utilize molecular modeling and drug design methods for biological or medicinal applications (cancer and other diseases).

Students interested in interning with us are encouraged to take at least one of the computational science certificate courses that we offer.
