

The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is the most prestigious physics competition in the world for high school students. The 56th IPhO was held in Bucaramanga, Colombia from July 4 to 12, 2026, drawing around 380 contestants from roughly 85 countries. What Is the International Physics Olympiad?
The IPhO is an individual competition in which each country sends a national team of up to five students, selected through its national physics olympiad. The event runs over roughly nine days in a different host country each year, combining two demanding exam days with scientific and cultural activities alongside peers from around the world.
The competition has two components, held on separate days with a rest day between them. The theoretical examination presents three problems over five hours, spanning mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, and modern physics, and is worth 30 of the 50 total marks. The experimental examination gives students five hours of hands-on laboratory work, requiring them to design measurements, collect and analyze real data, and draw defensible conclusions, and it carries the remaining 20 marks. That means the experimental exam is 40 percent of your total score, a fact many students overlook until it is too late to build the lab skills it demands.
Medals are awarded to roughly the top half of the field based on score thresholds rather than fixed national quotas, so there is no team score, and every point is earned individually.
The US Pathway: The US Physics Team
In the United States, the road to the IPhO runs through the US Physics Team program, sponsored by the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) and the American Institute of Physics (AIP). The program's mission is to promote and demonstrate academic excellence through preparation for and participation in the International Physics Olympiad, and its selection process unfolds in stages across the school year.
The first stage is the F=ma exam, a multiple-choice test focused on mechanics, administered each winter to students who register through their schools. Top F=ma scorers advance to the USA Physics Olympiad (USAPhO), a free-response exam covering the full breadth of physics that demands rigorous written solutions rather than answer selection. The strongest USAPhO performers are then invited to the US Physics Team training camp, an intensive residential program of advanced theory and laboratory work, from which the five students who represent the United States at the IPhO are chosen.

How to Prepare for the IPhO
Master the Fundamentals First
Olympiad problems punish shaky foundations. Before touching competition material, build genuine command of mechanics, electromagnetism, optics, thermodynamics, and modern physics through rigorous texts. Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday, Resnick, and Walker and University Physics by Young and Freedman are the standard foundations, and Problems in General Physics by Irodov is the classic bridge from textbook exercises to olympiad-level difficulty.
Drill Past Olympiad Papers
Nothing prepares you for the IPhO like the IPhO. Past papers from decades of competitions are freely available through the official IPhO website and its archives, and working them under timed conditions builds both the problem-solving depth and the time management the real exam demands. Start with your national olympiad's past papers, then graduate to international ones as your level rises.
Climb the National Ladder
The national selection process is not just a gate to pass through, it is the best training environment available. Each stage of the US Physics Team pipeline, from F=ma through USAPhO to camp, is calibrated to stretch you at exactly your current level. Treat every round as preparation for the next rather than a final destination.
Build Real Experimental Skills
Since the experimental exam carries 40 percent of the marks, laboratory practice cannot be an afterthought. Use your school's lab, design your own experiments from problem statements, and learn proper uncertainty analysis and statistical treatment of data, which the IPhO grades rigorously.

Olympiad preparation is a marathon measured in years, not weeks. A sustainable schedule that balances conceptual study, problem sets, and experimental work will beat sporadic intensity every time. Build in regular review cycles, and adjust the balance as national exam dates approach.
From Olympiad Physics to Original Research
The IPhO tests how well you can solve problems that already have answers. Original research asks whether you can find answers no one has yet.
