How to Win the West Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair

The West Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair (WVSSEF) is an annual event that empowers students across West Virginia to showcase their scientific research and compete across a wide range of categories.

Hosted by the West Virginia Department of Education, it brings together young minds passionate about science, engineering, and technology, and opens doors to prizes, scholarships, and national and international competition. Here's how it works and how to succeed.

How WVSSEF Works

WVSSEF is the state-level fair, and it serves as West Virginia's qualifier for the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). To reach it, students in grades 3–12 must first win their local, county, and regional science and engineering fairs, so the state fair brings together the best projects from across the Mountain State. It's a substantial event: the most recent fair featured over 270 students presenting more than 200 projects spanning materials science, animal and plant sciences, physics, astronomy, engineering, and more.

At the fair, participants present their research through detailed display boards and oral presentations, and judges, industry professionals and university professors, evaluate their methodology, results, conclusions, and presentation.

WVSSEF covers a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines, from engineering and the biological and physical sciences to behavioral sciences, mathematics, and computer science, so students can find a niche that matches their interests. Choosing the right project category is an important early decision, since it shapes who evaluates your work.

How to Qualify for the West Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair

Because WVSSEF sits at the top of a local → county → regional → state pipeline, your path starts close to home.

Compete and place well at your local and regional science and engineering fairs, then follow the guidelines for project approval, Scientific Review Committee (SRC) approval, and registration to advance to the state fair. If your project involves human participants, vertebrate animals, or hazardous materials, you'll need SRC review before you begin experimenting, so build that into your timeline early.

The top projects at WVSSEF earn the chance to represent West Virginia at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the world's largest pre-college science competition.
