Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) is one of the most well-known pre-college summer programs in the world, and for good reason. Each summer, thousands of high school students from more than 150 countries travel to Yale's campus in New Haven for a two-week academic experience built around lectures, seminars, and a small collaborative research project.

For students who are already building a research portfolio for a science fair, YYGS often comes up as an option worth considering alongside a project timeline. This guide walks through what the program actually involves, who qualifies, what it costs, and where it fits (and doesn't fit) into a competitive science fair path.


What Is Yale Young Global Scholars

YYGS is a two-week residential summer program hosted on Yale's campus. Students choose one of three academic tracks and spend their session attending faculty lectures, participating in small group seminars, and working on a short group project called a Capstone.

There are no grades or course credit. Instead, students receive a certificate of completion, and the value of the program comes from the exposure to Yale faculty, the caliber of peers, and the breadth of topics covered.

The program runs three sessions each summer, and for 2027 those sessions are scheduled for late June through late July. Each session draws a different group of students, so switching sessions does not change the academic content within a track.


The Innovations in Science and Technology Track

Students interested in STEM research typically apply to the Innovations in Science and Technology track, known as IST.

This track covers a wide span of scientific fields, including physics, molecular biology, chemistry, neuroscience, immunology, astronomy, and engineering, with an emphasis on applying scientific principles to real-world problems.

IST lectures and seminars are taught by Yale faculty and researchers, and past offerings have covered topics ranging from dark matter and galaxy formation to cancer biology, biohacking, and the ethics of artificial intelligence. Seminars change from year to year, so the exact lineup a student encounters will depend on the summer they attend.

Two other tracks run alongside IST: Politics of Law and Economics, and Solving Global Challenges. Students who are debating between a policy-focused competition and a lab-based science fair project sometimes use these tracks to help decide which direction fits them better.


Eligibility Requirements

YYGS eligibility is strict, and Yale does not make exceptions. To apply for the 2027 program, a student generally needs to meet the following criteria.

  • Be between 16 and 18 years old by the first day of Session III

  • Be able to participate in a rigorous academic curriculum delivered in English

  • Be a current high school sophomore or junior, or the international equivalent

  • Have a graduation date that falls within the program's accepted windows for the Northern or Southern Hemisphere

  • Be a first-time YYGS participant

Students from any country can apply, and YYGS offers need-based financial aid to domestic and international applicants alike.

Application Components and Deadlines

YYGS reviews every application holistically, which means essays and short responses carry real weight alongside grades and activities.

A complete application includes:

  • An activities list,

  • One longer essay and one shorter response,

  • Two brief "fast take" answers, an official transcript,

  • One recommendation submitted through YYGS's own recommendation form rather than a traditional letter.

There are two rounds each year. Early Action carries an $85 application fee and an earlier deadline, while Regular Decision carries a $100 fee and a later deadline. Students who are deferred from Early Action move into the Regular Decision pool automatically. YYGS also offers a fee waiver for families for whom the application cost would be a real burden, available after the financial aid section of the application is completed.

Applications for the 2027 program had not yet opened at the time of this guide, with Yale expecting the portal to open by the end of September. Interest in the program remains extremely high.

For the 2026 cycle, YYGS received more than 14,000 applications for spots across nine academic sessions, and about a third of admitted students received need-based financial aid.


Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition for one two-week residential session is $7,500, which covers housing, meals, and curriculum materials. Travel is not included. Full payment is due in mid-December for Early Action admits and mid-March for Regular Decision admits.

Families who need support can apply for need-based financial aid covering up to the full cost of tuition, and YYGS states that it is one of the only pre-college programs offering this aid equally to domestic and international students. Students who receive aid are still responsible for arranging their own travel.


How YYGS Fits Into a Science Fair Journey

YYGS is not a research fair, and it is not a substitute for the months of independent work a strong ISEF or Regeneron STS project requires. Its Capstone project is a short, staff-mentored group activity built for exploration within two weeks, not an independent paper a student can submit to competition. Where the program helps is earlier in the process, in the stage before a project topic is even locked in.

The IST track exposes students to research areas many high schoolers never encounter in a normal classroom, from immunology to astrophysics to applied engineering. For a student who is still searching for a science fair topic, a lecture or seminar can be the spark that turns into a real research question. Working alongside Yale faculty and a cohort of similarly curious peers also gives students practice talking about scientific ideas out loud, which is a skill that translates directly to judging interviews at ISEF and regional fairs.

The program also adds a credential that reads well in a personal statement or competition biography, particularly for students who pair it with a real science fair placement. A YYGS session shows initiative and STEM engagement, but it is the independent research and competition results that carry the most weight with judges and admissions committees.

For students who leave YYGS with an idea but no clear plan for turning it into an ISEF-ready project, that is usually the point where structured mentorship matters most. Three Tips for a Strong Application

Because YYGS receives far more applicants than it can admit, small details in the application matter. A few patterns consistently separate stronger applications from weaker ones.

Start early enough that a recommender has real time to complete the YYGS recommendation form, ideally at least two weeks before the deadline.

Use the essays to show a specific, personal reason for pursuing the chosen track rather than a generic statement of interest in science.

Describe leadership and initiative through concrete outcomes rather than titles held, and let independent projects, whether a science fair entry, a personal research question, or self-directed learning, do the talking about genuine curiosity.


What This Means for Your STEM Goals

If a student is choosing between spending a summer at YYGS or spending that same time deep in an independent research project, the honest answer is that it depends on where they are in their science fair journey.

A rising sophomore or junior who has not yet found a topic may get real value from the exposure YYGS provides. A student who already has a research question and needs to actually run experiments, collect data, and write up results is usually better served putting that same two weeks directly into the project, since ISEF-level research takes sustained time that a program schedule cannot always accommodate.

Either way, the earlier a student gets clarity on their research direction, the more competitive their final project can be.
