The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is the most prestigious chemistry competition in the world for high school students. First held in 1968, it now brings together national teams from more than 90 countries for two grueling five-hour exams, one theoretical and one practical, that test chemical knowledge and laboratory skill at a level far beyond any high school curriculum.

The 58th IChO was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from July 10 to 19, 2026, the first time Central Asia has hosted the competition. This guide explains how the competition works, walks through the American qualification pathway step by step, and maps out what to study at each stage of the climb.


What Is the IChO?

The IChO is an individual competition in which each country sends a team of up to four students, selected through its national chemistry olympiad, accompanied by two team leaders. The event runs for about ten days in a different host country each year, combining the two exam days with cultural programs and scientific exchange among the strongest young chemists in the world.

Both exams run five hours. The theoretical exam covers organic, inorganic, physical, and analytical chemistry through demanding multi-part problems, while the practical exam puts students at the bench to carry out synthesis, analysis, and measurement tasks with real glassware, real reagents, and real consequences for sloppy technique. Medals and certificates are awarded by score, and an IChO medal is among the most respected credentials in student science.

Upcoming editions are already scheduled, with Chinese Taipei hosting the 59th IChO from July 19 to 28, 2027, and Messina, Italy hosting in 2028.


Eligibility

The international rules are simple:

  • You must be selected through your country's national chemistry olympiad,

  • You must be under 20 years of age on July 1 of the competition year.

In the United States, that means being enrolled in high school (grades 9 through 12), with home-schooled students eligible on equivalent standards. The real eligibility hurdle is performance, because every seat on the national team is earned through a multi-stage exam gauntlet.


The US Pathway: The US National Chemistry Olympiad

In the United States, qualification runs through the US National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO), administered by the American Chemical Society (ACS) through its local sections. The process unfolds in four stages across the spring.

Stage One: The Local Exam

The journey begins with the Local Chemistry Olympiad Exam, coordinated through your school, usually by a chemistry teacher acting as exam coordinator, and administered by your ACS local section in March. The local exam is a timed multiple-choice test covering general chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and analytical chemistry, with questions ranging from fundamentals to genuinely difficult applications. There is typically no penalty for wrong answers, so answer everything. Top scorers are nominated by their local section to advance, with each section's nomination count set by ACS guidelines.

Stage Two: The National Exam

The USNCO National Exam, held in April, is a different animal. It runs in three parts: a multiple-choice section, a free-response section demanding detailed written solutions, and a laboratory practical testing hands-on experimental skill, from designing procedures to analyzing data and defending conclusions. The national exam is where broad competence separates from deep mastery, and where laboratory experience starts to matter as much as problem solving on paper.

Stage Three: The Study Camp

The top 20 scorers nationwide are invited to the US Study Camp, a roughly two-week intensive held in early summer at the University of Maryland. Camp combines advanced theoretical instruction with rigorous laboratory training, and it doubles as the final selection round.

Stage Four: The National Team

At the end of camp, four students are chosen to represent the United States at the IChO, where they compete against the top students from more than 90 countries.


What to Study at Each Stage

Your study plan should expand as you advance, because each stage draws from a wider and deeper pool.

For the local exam, master the core: atomic structure, periodic trends, bonding, stoichiometry, states of matter, thermochemistry, gas laws, solutions, kinetics, equilibrium, acid-base chemistry, electrochemistry, and the foundations of organic chemistry including functional groups, nomenclature, and stereochemistry.

This is honors and AP-level material pushed to its hardest applications, and past USNCO local exams, freely available from ACS, are your best practice source. Quiz-style competitions like the chemistry rounds of the National Science Bowl also make excellent supplementary training at this stage, sharpening the fast recall that timed multiple-choice exams reward.

For the national exam and beyond, add the advanced layers: organic reaction mechanisms, synthesis and retrosynthesis, spectroscopy (NMR, IR, and mass spec), coordination chemistry and crystal field theory, quantum chemistry, instrumental analysis and chromatography, and the biochemistry foundations of amino acids, proteins, and enzyme kinetics. The IChO syllabus itself, published on the official IChO site alongside decades of past exams, defines the outer boundary of what you need.

Laboratory skills deserve deliberate attention from the start, since it is tested directly at nationals, at camp, and at the IChO itself. School labs are the natural first venue, and chemistry summer research programs put you in real research settings where technique, precision, and data analysis become second nature long before an exam proctor is watching.


From Olympiad Chemistry to Original Research

The IChO rewards mastery of chemistry that is already known. Original research asks whether you can add to it. Many of the strongest olympiad chemists eventually make that transition, building research projects in areas like synthesis, materials, or biochemistry that compete at science fairs like the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the world's largest pre-college STEM research competition.
